Well worth a visit but best to go outside of normal lunchtime and dinnertime hours. The dumplings at this restaurant were some of the best I tasted in China, which I have visited 10+ times previously and sampled a great variety of dumplings. However, I made sure I wetted the insides of my cup with the hot milk before drinking. The Chinese hosts assured me these would be OK. The only concern I had, which proved groundless fortunately, was the apparently dirty plastic cups we were given from which to drink our hot soya bean milk. The dumplings took about 20 minutes to prepare which was no problem. We had an extensive selection of dumplings including one comprising vegetable, meat and shrimp (which were juicy and full of flavour). However, if I had been by myself I think I would have struggled. dumpling choices, was in English and Chinese. Downstairs was packed but upstairs was much quieter. The restaurant is claimed to have a history going back 600 years. I was taken by my Chinese hosts to this restaurant for a late lunch on a Tuesday. after all, we didnt feel like swallow down the "dough" outside and left the rest of the dumplings there.Īs the price range of this restaurant wasnt consider cheap in that area, and the whole restaurant is mainly about dumplings, we were really dissapointed with the dumplings quality. he claimed that the layers were a bit thick, and its ok to eat as it was handmade. The most dissapointed part was the outer part of the dumplings were too thick and not ready cook! as the price for this small bowl of shao mai wasnt consider cheap, we decided to raise this issue to the staff. we were told that dumplings need around 20min to steam and ready, but we were waiting for more than 45min to get the shao mai served. guess the kitchen staff totally forget to make us our shao mai. Serving was ok, but food preparation was taking too long time. suprisingly there were not much customers when we went for dinner. Read about this restaurant from my Beijing guidebook, claim to be a famous restaurant which have to wait outside to be seated.
